J Sainsbury Churn Truck |
Sainsbury's started in a dairy at
173 Drury Lane. John James Sainsbury had six sons and the family built a
reputation for quality and good prices. The first branch opened in 1873 in
Kentish Town and several more opened over the years selling many delicacies such
as cooked meats. The braches were very distinctive with marble topped counters
and green and cream wall tiles.John Sainsbury died in 1928 and his wife followed just six months later. At the start of the Second World War the shops had grown in number to 250. At this time business was bad as rationing meant many items were unobtainable and Sainsbury image was all about quality, during this time its sales suffered greatly. Sainsbury grew to become the UK market leader in the late 1980's but was overtaken by Tesco's a decade later. |
