My memories of British Railways are varied. However the smell of the carriages, forever stick in my mind. When my grandfather, mother and brothers used to head off to Torquay each summer, we’d leave Swansea at around 7am. The carriage used to stink of cigarette smoke, the only thing that stopped me from being sick was a packet of Polo mints. Strangely they used to make one of my brothers ill, so I couldn’t resist taunting him. Once I dropped one into his cup of tea and hewas ill for the whole trip - fantastic fun. TAFF
