With a serious shortage of suitable towing vehicles at the outbreak of the war in 1939, arrangements were made to convert 2,000 taxi cabs. The Austin Low Loader was ideal for this purpose being robust with a tight turning circle able to carry crew and equipment. It could also carry hoses. Even during these times many still had their “For Hire” meters in place.
