During 1963/64, I was Quality Control Engineer at Lotus Cars Ltd in Cheshunt, Herts; supervising GRP body production for Lotus Elan MkIs in the No.4 factory. Just up the road at the main plant Elans were produced alongside Lotus Cortinas for the Ford Motor Co., with production of the latter confined to 25 a month. In an endeavour to raise interest in the marque, Colin Chapman had a Cortina prepared as a patrol car complete with police decals and a very large blue light on the roof. It regularly hurtled around the Cheshunt Industrial estate roads under demonstration to regional police authorities and occasionally progressed as far as the main High Street where everything stopped! As far as I know, it did not enter production.
