Singin in the Rain

Just singing,

just singing in the rain!

Over 50 years ago the wonderful musical ‘Singing in the Rain’ hit our screens.

MGM’s technicolor musical treasure as it was called was released in 1952 and became one of the most celebrated film musicals of all time- starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. It was set in 1927and epitomised the creativity of the studios from stage musicals to lavish screen production. The choreographer was the stars main actor Gene Kelly and its producers Arthur Freed, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Donen.

Who can forget the title song ‘Singing in the Rain’ which sequence must have been shown hundreds of times, or the fabulous Donald O’Connor dancing up the wall! Not forgetting the spectacular music ‘Broadway Melody’ with guest star Cyd Charisse, and how gorgeous Debbie looked!

Most films sink without trace, but ‘Singing in the Rain’ remains right up with that list of immortals forever.

The producers were responsible between them for other great classics such as ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ ‘Gigi’, ‘On the Town’, ‘Meet me in St. Louis’ and ‘An American in Paris’. A star studded production - you could say that - from the producers/directors to the cast - jewels of the film industry and with the exeption of a couple of numbers - the whole of the musical score for ‘Singing in the Rain’ was composed by Freed & Broom for other different Hollywood productions in the preceeding two decades!

Our ‘Daily Sketch’ newspaper delivery van shows the film advertised on its side panel. A must model for newspaper vehicle collectors as well.
