Back in the 1960's many of us rented television sets. I remember the
excitement in our house when I come home in 1965 to see one sitting in
the front room. DER (Domestic Electric Rentals) was one such company and
was owned by Thorn who as a manufacturer needed control of the retail
outlets. Their main brand was Ferguson, whilst Radio Rentals used the
name Baird. The two groups were soon to merge as the market began to
shrink as the costs of TVs dropped and more of us decided to purchase as
the quality of the televisions improved.. Other popular names were
Rediffusion, Decca and Rank.
