D.Di Mascios impressive fleet of ice cream vans worked the streets of
Coventry and surrounding areas for more than half of the last century.
Such was their influence a new word came into the local dialect; asking
for a ‘D. Di’ can still be heard occasionally even today. The Di Maschio
name is from Valvori, near Cassino in Italy. Their first premises were
in King William Street around the 1930’s, others opened later in
Smithfield Street and Clay Lane. There are over 70 vehicles that are
known to have been in the D.Di Mascio’s fleet – the Anglia was the last.
There is an excellent book on the subject written by Roger de Boer,
Harvey Pitcher and Alan Wilkinson (ISBN 9780954398217).
