Luchini's Bedford CA |
|
Luchini’s were established in Market Place, Cockermouth in 1901. 16 year
old Luigi Luchini leased premises from which he manufactured and sold
ice cream and confectionery. He had arrived in the country from Italy
four years earlier and was employed initially washing lemonade bottles,
before moving on to Tognarelli’s for a short period. His own new business prospered, interrupted only during the 1914-1918 war when he served with the Border Regiment, during which time his wife ran the business. He had eight children and as they grew older they played an increasing part in the prosperity of the firm. Luigi and his family started delivering ices to the surrounding district, firstly by horse drawn vehicles and later by motor. A further outlet was opened and on Luigi’s retirement, Frank a son took over the running of the business. He met his death whilst serving in North Africa in 1942 and another son Ralph after demobbing from the Royal engineers in 1947, took over the business with his brother Denis and sister Evelyn. A shop was then opened in Keswick. In 1989 the business was taken over by Ralph’s son Tony, who is a member of the Oxford Diecast collectors club, which explains why we were pleased to include this model when we were deciding on a new livery. Thanks to him for all his help - TAFF
I like the latest Bedford CA in Lucinis
livery. Our local Italian firms were Domachi s,Cresci s and Sidoli s
and I guess that every area of the country had its Italian cafes and
ice cream van proprietors. The "Diploma Ices" wording on the Lucinis
van brought back memories for me to,Tom Domachi and Co had "Diploma
Ice Cream" painted on the roof sides of their Bedford vans in simular
fashion.Tom and his brother operated from a cafe on St Teilo
St,Pontardulais and ran 2 Bedford CFs and at least 1 CA from at least
the 1950s into the 80s.His vans sold everything;soft drinks were
retrieved from an opening locker at the rear of the vans and paid for
at the counter.Tom just stopped comming one day and we were all sorry
to hear that he d had a pull with his heart and had had to give up for
that reason. The end of an institution eh!
Some local liveries would of course be
of interest to us though only you know how they d sell and if it would
be worth it.I am surprised though, that you haven t issued Mr Whippy
and Mr Softee liveries. They were Walls and Lyons Maid vehicles
respectively with soft ice cream. The Commers were the most associated
with both brands though Bedfords were used too.The illuminated cones
on the Whippy vans and tubs on the Softees would be a distinctive
feature. There is a preserved Commer Mr Whippy van in Swansea. There is
a firm based at the Aztec Centre,Queensway,Forestfach converting vans
to ice cream vans and i ve often seen it there. One to look into for
the future perhaps?Anyway keep up the good work and I look forward to
further developments...
Regards,
PAUL
