Kensitas

“Our belief no finer Leaf”. This was their message delivered by the butler with his tray, on which lay a pack of Kensitas. Available in 10’s and 20’s sleeve form with the gift coupons (golden brown in colour) inside. Novel silk cards were also given away with the packs before gift coupons, the most famous being the sets released in the 30’s ‘Kensitas Silk Flowers’. The butlers name was ‘Jenkyn’ and he always presented the cigarettes and various slogans were used over the years.

A very unusual pack sent in by a member is K4-24 cigarettes, ‘20 for you and 4 for your friends’. Jenkyn’s message this time is ‘As good as really good cigarettes can be’.

LETTER FROM COLIN CLARK

My Nan was reminiscing with my Granddad one day, just before he passed away unexpectedly. She was going over how life had turned out for her coming from a mining community in Alfreton, Derbyshire where as a young girl she once said to her father how she would like to marry a man that dressed just like the man on the front of the Kensitas Cigarette packet, a man who dressed very smartly in a suit all day long. Her Father laughed and dismissed the idea stating that men where they lived and worked didn't look anything like the Butler on his Cigarette packet as men there were all connected to the mining industry!

Time passed by and years later she met my Granddad who had worked all his life as a Head Waiter / Restaurant Manager, he dressed in a suit and tails all his working life just like the man on the Cigarette packet! My Nan thought this was highly amusing while telling my Granddad this story. It was at this point my Granddad told her that the man on the Kensitas Cigarette packet was in fact his Father! A minor detail don't you think? They had only been together for almost 70 years and it had never been mentioned!

Strange but true wouldn't you say? My Nan had in some bizarre way predicted who she was going to marry while she was a little girl.

Although I have no new facts to add to your interesting article on my computer i would like to tell you about my time with KENSITAS . I started working for them at their factory in Livingstone /Stanley rd in STRATFORD EAST LONDON ,but at 80 years old now I cant remember the start date but i do know i continued working for them till they finished in Stratford
I was a cigarette machine operator and was the first person to run the first MK8 making machine with the then new PA7 filter attachment.
MOLINS the MK8/PA7 inventors worked for about one year on my machine without making a proper cigarette whilst there were perfecting the machine
It was a great time in my working life and I was very sorry when we had to leave, I still have the gift set of a pen and propelling pencil set with KENSITAS on it they gave us on our departure
i hope i haven't bored you with my reminiscing
Mr Bryce William Singleton

I was a sales representative for Kensitas (J.Wix & Sons) from1959 to 1963/3 I worked in the East Anglian area calling on shops, wholesalers, hotels and clubs.
My sales director was a grand gentleman called Peter Ellington and my area manager was Harry Jeffries. I m sure the ladies who are mentioned in your report would
Know of these gentlemen also the company secretary Sidney Wildman.
I enjoyed my time with Wix’s and we had a great sales team selling lots of cigarettes. I remember, on one occasion, I got a pat on the back for selling over one million Cigarettes in one week.

I would like to hear from any of the other reps who worked me at that time Regards Fred Carr
