DE RESZKE

So many cigarettes of the 40’s and 50’s and even 60’s were to have a Piccadilly address and De Reszke was no exception.Jean De Reszke was the brand and manufactured by J. Millhoff and Co Limited, Piccadilly W. 1.Jean De Reszke it seems was a well known singer as the brand in its strap-line refers to him as follows.

“Just as good and pure a cigarette as was specially made for and always smoked by that great singer”.

The brand consisted of ‘De Reszke Majors’ in grey packs (A) and in white packs (B), each of which carried a distinct picture of ‘De Reszke’ holding his song book. Whilst De Reszke filter tip (C) had a much smaller picture and no song book, there was also De Reszke ‘Turks’ (D) known as the aristocrats ‘fag’ (no picture of De Reszke). Being Turkish one presumes was probably too strong for or conductive to a good throat, or they’d killed him!

The De Reszke vehicle featured is the Chevrolet showing the ‘Majors’ brand (A).

FURTHER INFORMATION

Mr F E Mundy (162213) advises us that as a boy in the 1930's he recalls an advertising 'chant' broadcast by either Radio Normandy &/or Radio Luxembourg

" Mines a Minor, the best cigarette that you can ever get. Mines a Minor why don't you try one of mine"

The broadcasts were of music interspersed with advertising ditties sung in English

Thank you Oxford Diecast for having around! It has helped me place this advertising song, the same as on your site I attach the version on the flip side of an aluminium disk sent back to NSW from London by a relative while he was visiting there in 1936.

David Nash

Hi Just stumbled on your site,
I have a "De Reszke Filter Tipped" cigarette tin that holds my Grandfathers medals from his time as a Sapper in the Royal New New Zealand Infintry Regiment, North Africa, WW2.
The inside of the tin reads "Just as mild and harmless a cigarette as was specially blended for and always smoked by that great tenor Jean De Reszke"
Similar I guess to the quote on your website plus I read that he was Polish...not Turkish.

Cheers

Below is an Enamel Advertising plate used we believe around the 50's although we're not entirely sure about this. Does anyone know.

Here are two more signs that have been uncovered.

Hello, I recently bought this enamel sign not knowing what De Reszke was , I saw your web site and now i know .The advertising 'chant' '' Mines a Minor'' remembered by Mr Mundy is obviously correct .Thought you might be interested in a picture of it .
