Robin |
Back in 1860 Thomas Ogden opened his first tobacco shop in
Liverpool. At this time it was a flourishing port and a centre for trading. The
shop proved so successful that he opened several more and soon diversified into
manufacturing. The first factory was opened in St James's Street in 1870, and
various tobacco
products were introduced over the years. By 1899 all of the manufacturing and
warehousing operations were under one roof in Boundary Lane. One of its most
famous products being St Bruno which was introduced in 1896.Maybe one of the most memorable events in its history, was when in 1901 Ogdens was taken over by the American Tobacco Company (ATC) of the USA. which controlled about 90%
of the US market. Faced with the prospect of such aggressive competition, 13
British producers merged to form the Imperial Tobacco Company. This move and the
prospect of Imperial threatening to compete in the American market lead to a
peace treaty being negotiated. Ogdens was sold back to the British for $15
million. Our Bullnose features Robin which was available in the 1930’s. |
