Waverley |
| Founded by Charles Lambert and Charles Butler - Lambert and Butler started its life in 1834 at St John St, Clerkenwell, London. A few years later they moved to Drury Lane. As well as manufacturing cigarettes they are also specialists in pipe tobacco and cigars. Like many of the British companies they played their part in the great tobacco wars in the early 1900’s. Lambert & Butler were on friendly terms with Wills and therefore it is not surprising that they were one of the 13 companies that met in the Queens Hotel in Birmingham to counter the threat of the American planned takeovers. With over 500 tobacco firms some of whom were struggling it was important that only the stronger companies were involved. We are not sure when the Waverley brand was introduced, but we have seen many of their cards dated around the 1900’s. We presume the brand had some connection with Sir Walter Scott and the Waverley novels |
