ARMY & NAVY STORES
Founded
in 1871, the Society of Army & Navy Stores was formed by a group of
Army & Navy officers to provide basic necessities and luxuries of
life to all members, namely British officers, serving soldiers and
their families. Financed with an initial capital outlay of fifteen
thousand pounds of share capital, the society was based on the
cooperative principle with share dividends available to members.Following the depression of the 1920's with the reduction in trade, the membership base was broadened to permit the general public to become members free of charge. In 1934 the society's name was changed from Army & Navy Cooperative Society Ltd. to Army & Navy Stores.
The company produced a catalogue from which a broad range of products could be ordered and delivered cheaply. A reproduction of this catalogue found its way into Taff’s hands and we produced this lovely Chevrolet Delivery Truck. Checking out the prices back in 1939 makes great reading. A typewriter for £10, soup spoons 30/- per dozen or if your looking for a lovely pair of patent shoes you could have purchased them for 24 shillings and 6d - those certainly were the days. For convenience the items in the catalogue were also available in the Indian depots - Bombay, Calcutta and New Delhi.
