Bird's Custard

The origins of the brand goes back to to 1837 when Alfred Bird invented his custard for his wife who was allergic to eggs and couldn’t eat homemade egg custard. He later went on to invent Baking Powder which revolutionised home baking. Alfred Bird registered as a pharmacist in 1842. He had served an apprenticeship to Phillip Harris of Birmingham and was a qualified chemist and druggist. Advertising started around 1875 and Bird's Custard quickly became renowned as a wholesome and nutritious food.

FURTHER INFORMATION Alfred Bird is buried in Key Hill Cemetery, in Birmingham. Presumably a modest man, his memorial stone is quite plain and simple. - Pauline Roberts
