The Black Watch

Raised over 250 years ago with the purpose of keeping a check on wild clansman it is the oldest Highland Regiment. There are several ideas about the origins of the name, but the most probable is because of the dark tartan that they wore in contrast to the regular guardsmen who wore red. The Red Hackle was worn from the 1770's and later an order was issued giving the Black Watch the sole right to wear it, which they do to this day.
The Regiments first action was in 1745 at the Battle of Fontenoy in Flanders and it has served in almost every British Campaign since. At the outbreak of the first world war there were seven battalions which included the Territorials all of which saw action over 8,000 members of the Regiment lost their lives during this time. In World War II the 1st Battalion, 5th (Angus) and the 7th (Fife) arrived in Africa as part of the 51st Highland Division and took part in the battle of El Alamein.
Men of the Regiment were the last to leave Hong Kong when it was handed over to China in 1997. More recently the 1st Battalion has been deployed to the Gulf and took part in the Operation Telic. During this deployment it suffered its latest casualty Lance Corporal Barry Stephen who was killed in action.
