Bartons
Thomas Henry Barton used a Durham Churchill charabanc to start the company's first service, between Long Eaton and the Nottingham Goose Fair, in October 1908. Barton was a prolific rebuilder of buses, producing both coaches and double-deckers on rebuilt chassis. Many new and secondhand buses also joined the fleet, and Barton kept up its modern double-deck image with Northern Counties-bodied AEC Regents which had wrap-around windscreens on both decks.
During the 1950s Barton had over 280 vehicles and 1000 employees. Numerous small companies were purchased, especially in the 1960s, including Hall Brothers of South Shields on Tyneside, and Robin Hood Coaches of Nottingham, whose emblem was retained and applied to the whole fleet. Our Morris J2 is quite unusual as it contains the destination Works Service and is liveried up with Land Air Cruises. We would be interested to find out more about this vehicle, so if you have more information please let us know. TAFF

RE JM 016 Barton

Fleet No 826

This vehicle was used for ferrying passengers to Derby airport for flights to the continent for the new land Air Cruises as the main coaches were based on the continent.

The photograph shown was taken outside the head office building at Chilwell and despite the indicator blind it is thought that no 826 was never used on stage carriage work

Reference your request in the issue no 103 of the Globe for more information on the Morris J2 Van. I have phoned my brother John - who is expert on Bartons Transport History and he informs me the destination on the van. 'Works Service' was to transport engineer from one depot to another - on any coach book down our route. I presume the loud ?? Cruises was to ?? this English & Continental town, which I understand was very good.
