Land Rover 80

The demand for the first release of the Land Rover, the 80 inch version was unprecedented. We sold out far more quickly than we had expected. We have produced a second uncertificated variant, with several changes and the model is coded LAN180001E. The differences are as follows. There is a thin silver line along the bottom and sides of the rear tailgate. On the chassis the axle parts are painted black. The two hinges at the back edge of the bonnet, below windscreen are in silver as are the upright pegs each side of spare wheel. The rib along the panel below windscreen is painted in satin black.  Order this item now

MORE INFO

The reason I am interested in this particular model is that I learned to drive on what was reputedly the first of these which got onto the homemarket. The story was that it got dropped into the harbour at, I think, Liverpool was fished out sent back to Rovers for reconditioning and then was obtained by a senior member in the Home Office for his son who farmed in South Wiltshire. We bought it secondhand in about 1952. It was a left-hand drive model with the string in the floor to engage four-wheel drive in reverse. It was normally in four-wheel drive forwards but I understand with a slightly lower ratio to the front wheels so only engaging if the rear ones slipped. Unfortunately I do not know whether it had the ten or 14hp engine. The registration letters were UML but I cannot remember the number.
I hope this may be of interest.
