Scouts Honour

This letter came from member Frank Deakin from Oldham.

Dear Michael,

In Globe issue No. 28, following previous mentions to boys weekly magazines, I wondered if you would be interested in the enclosed copy of ‘The Scout’ weekly magazine which wasn’t published just for scouts, but was on free sale at all newsagents.

As you look back you feel you should have kept more things, as they seem to become more interesting, when you manage to turn something up of years gone by, but there again, what do you do with them. This year, I have completed 75 years of active involvement, being Cubmaster, a Scoutmaster and a Commissioner for over 20 years. Last month, I resigned as County President and accepted the lesser offer of Vice President.

On turning out some papers, I came across this copy of ‘The Scout’ and looking at the date of publication, was delighted to see it is October 24 the 1938.

It was first published in 1908, the year scouting started and ceased sometime after the second world war. At that period, it was in colour, but unfortunately, I didn't save them, I have kept all my copies of the Globe but I reckon someday they will follow my copies of ‘The Scout’.

If and when you have no further use for it perhaps you would kindly return it.

Sincerely yours,

Frank Deakin
