Where’s it Gone?

Why has the fabulous ‘Picture Post’ disappeared from our newsagents? Like so many of the great magazines, its circulation decreased and it became too expensive to print. A few other names like ‘Revielle’, ‘Weekend’, ‘Titbits’ also became victims.

‘Picture Post’ was first seen on the magazine racks in 1938 and sadly folded in 1957. As a final curtain to this wonderful circulation, they printed the same cover on the last days print run as the first days cover of the magazine.

When launched, it carried 80 pages and when it finished nearly 20 years later, it had been reduced to 48 pages.

‘Picture Post’ was designed to bring the world news in picture from and when launched, it had orders for 30,000 copies from W.H. Smith. After four months, the circulation was a staggering 1,350,000! But like so many things T.V. superseded this media for news and switched on their T.Vs. they switched off ‘Picture Post’.

The lovely Chevrolet (probably a Bedford then) shows our featured magazine in all it’s uncoloured glory. Red and Black and just 3d per copy. They would certainly need a fleet of vehicles to deliver 1.35 million copies we guess.
