Good Housekeeping
Good Housekeeping has been in circulation for over
eighty years first hitting the shelves in 1920’s. It’s style has changed , but
it has always appealed to the women in the home. Our Bedford is based on the
cover from seventy years ago being the Christmas issue, strange
times before the outbreak of war.
Many of the front covers during this era were based on paintings by Vernon
Thomas and all seemed to include children.An article from a magazine in the 1940’s explained how we could feed a family of five on £3.10 a week. Interestingly Taff says the menu is much better than what he eats today. It includes:
Topside of Beef
. Liver and Bacon
. Toad in the Hole
The tips add that if you have no sugar then you should substitute with dates and raisins - the
banana
trifle looks very good.
