"Wherever Right and Glory Lead" |
|
That’s the motto of the Royal Engineers and indicates the worldwide nature of the regiment. The electric telegraph was first used in the Crimean War in 1854 and a Telegraph Troop was formed in 1870. This was the start of a special operations unit and led to the forming of a separate signals corps after the first World War in 1920. The Royal Engineers. The badge of the Corps is the Royal Cypher of the reigning monarch, within the garter, surrounded by a laurel wreath - the crown above and the title below. The Royal Engineers fought in all theatres of war in World War II, performing a wide range of different activities and duties, ranging from building defences, demolishing the enemy defences, buildings, roads and destroying bridges (A Bridge too Far) as their own troops withdrew. In addition, engineers were involved in making safe unexploded bombs and for camouflaging and the concealment of arms and forces. . |
