MILO10 771 Naval Air Squadron - click for HI RES

771 Naval Air Squadron

The 771 Naval Air Squadron operates Westland Sea King M5 SAR (search and rescue) helicopters and they average more than 220 missions every year. The crest of the unit originates from the early days when the squadron flew the Sea Hornet. They’ve also adopted the ‘ace of clubs’ as a logo which is displayed on the nose and sides of the aircraft.
Often operating in extreme weather conditions and at the limits of endurance and range, thousands of people owe their lives to the outstanding feats of bravery performed as routine events by the duty crews. The squadron is on 15 minute alert status from sunrise to sunset, and 45 minutes at night time although in most cases they are airborne in less than five minutes. A typical crew consists of two pilots, an observer, a winchman and a SAR diver. The diver is able to jump 40 feet from a hovering helicopter and free swim in the open sea. We feature the crest of the Squadron on our Bullnose

MORE INFORMATION

Dear Taff, I've just seen Globe 44 and am most impressed by your first Naval Air Squadron. As a Royal Navy pilot in the sixties and seventies I served in many such units (they are not called "regiments" by the way!), and my two sons have followed my example, the elder, Stephen, presently in 824 Naval Air Squadron ( Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), flying Merlin helicopters) whilst David has just returned from the Gulf in H.M.S. Ark Royal. He served (and still serves) in A Flight of 849 N.A.S. (motto "primus video" or "I See First" if I'm not mistaken), an Airborne Early Warning (AEW) squadron equipped with Sea King Mk 7 aircraft. It might be of interest that this squadron was first formed sixty years ago (though not with the same aircraft!). A Flight (embarked in Ark Royal) has been heavily involved in the Iraq war and tragically lost seven aircrew and two aircraft in a mid-air collision on 22nd March.
