The name ‘Chindiit’ came from a corruption of the Chinthe, the Burmese word for the winged stone lion - the guardians of the Buddhist temples. On its formation it was officially known as the 77th infantry and was formed and trained by Major Orde Charles Wingate DSO - "A man of genius, who might well have become a man of destiny" - Winston Churchill.

The First Chindit Expedition -’Operation Longcloth’, was launched in February 1943 and there were heavy casualties, but it proved that British Troops could fight on equal terms with the Japanese in the jungle. Over the next few months the Chindits destroyed roads, railway bridges and convoys, but suffered heavy losses.
