815 Squadron

815 Naval Air Squadron provides fast, agile Lynx helicopters for the frigates and destroyers of the Royal Navy. It is based at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset, and is the largest helicopter squadron in the world, as well as one the oldest squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm. The Squadron operates the Mk3 and, in increasing numbers, the Mk 8 Westland Lynx. It is equipped with a computerised Central Tactical System (CTS) which allows the crew to manage highly complex tactical situations; and a Passive Identification Device (PID) which is a long range infra red camera. Both makes of aircraft can be armed with Sea Skua anti ship missiles, depth charges and Stingray torpedoes, and can be used in a variety of roles - anti surface warfare, anti submarine warfare, reconnaissance and communications.
