 Home & Colonial Gown Van

Sir Julius Drewe was a self-made millionaire whose chain of Home and Colonial Stores enabled him to retire in 1899 at the age of 33. (only a few more years to go for Taff!) He had discovered that a Norman baron named Drogo de Teigne was his ancestor and was determined to build a castle on the acres that had once belonged to him. He chose a site near Drewsteignton, Devon, 900 foot above the Teign gorge the foundation stone was laid on Sir Julius' 55th birthday in 1911. His stores continued to prosper and our gown van is shown carrying advertising, boasting over 100 stores in the 1960’s.
