The Gown vans were such a familiar site on the roads, you’d think there would be many more surviving examples - but there aren’t. The main reason is that so many were involved in accidents, as their road holding was not so good. Michael drove one and like others, he says that the cornering was atrocious. With a full load of gowns the vehicle would sway from side to side. I have to admit that it took Dusty to remind me what a shilling was - yes I am younger than you think. Anyway by the time he’d finished we’d moved on to farthings, chains etc etc.
