KENT POLICE |
| The constabulary was formed on 14th January 1857. The first Chief
Constable was John Henry Hay RUXTON, an ex-army Captain. He had joined
the Kings Own Regiment in 1834, as an ensign, and was concerned with
the military control of convicts transported to Australia. His
experience of the convict ships, and the hard life in trying to
colonise the harsh wilderness of the Australian countryside, set him
in good stead when appointed as the Chief Constable of Kent. He has
been described as the 'perfect English Gentleman', as he used to more
often than not wear his tweeds and plus fours, instead of his uniform.
At the time of his appointment his salary was £400 per annum. His
first constables were awarded just 18 shillings (80 new pence) a week.
By the time Mr Ruxton retired on 14th August 1894, the 222 officers
and men he had employed, had either resigned, retired or died. Today
Kent has a resident population of approximately 1.5 million people, a
quarter of people living in rural areas.Kent County Constabulary
polices an area of 1,442 square miles in the south-east corner of the
United Kingdom. This is the first in the series of vehicles categorised as Emegency |
