London City Council took over London’s ambulances in
1930, this service bravely continued through the dark days of World War
II. By the end of 1945 some 48,709 war casualties had been assisted by
the London County Council in conjunction with the London Auxiliary
Ambulance Service. At its peak, the wartime service in Greater London
included several thousand vehicles these ranged from private cars to
goods vehicles that were brought into service at night after they had
already done their day’s commercial duties. Like everyone else LCC found
itself short of vehicles after the war but had an eye to the future and
was quickly taking initiatives in ambulance design. LCC had a large
advantage over most other authorities in that it had its own superbly
equipped workshops at Wandsworth which was capable of producing large
numbers of new bodied Bedford ambulances from 1947 onwards. |
