Scarborough |
| Scarborough is the largest town on the Yorkshire Coast, situated
between the other two Yorkshire Coast towns, Bridlington and Whitby.
It is surrounded by the North Yorkshire Moors to the north of the
town. The nearest cities are Hull (South), York (West) and
Middlesbrough (North) The Town Centre is high above the sea on top of the cliffs, with a steep drop down to the promenade below, which incorporates the Harbour, Amusements and Futurist Theatre. Continue along the Proenade and you come to Marine Drive. This is below the Castle on top of the cliffs, and in the afternoon a dark shadow from the cliffs covers everything. Marine Drive is made up of cobbles which makes for a bumpy ride in a car, and even more so on the open-top buses that run along the seaside in the school holidays and summer. At the north end of Marine Drive you come to the North Bay. Buses terminate at the Corner Cafe. Next to the Corner Cafe is the Atlantis Water Park, and next to that is the beautiful Peasholm Park, which consists of a lake, a large island in the middle, if you climb the steep hill to the top of the island you come to the ponds with the fish. Go to the bottom of the island and you can see the Battleships. These Battleships do shows in the summer months. In the middele of the Lake is the Bandstand. You can sail around the lake in boats shaped like either Swans or Crocodiles. You can also take out Rowing Boats, or if you don't want to row or pedal you can go on the 'Motor Swan' and let the captain do the work for you! Go across the road and you find the Miniature Railway, Kinderland and the lake. Half of the Lake - which you can walk beside - is used by Kinderland for their water ride (which throws you almost vetically down into the water in a big boat on rails) or go boating. The other half is dominated by swans. At the other side of the water ride the Mini Railway runs past. The Railway runs alongside Kinderland, by the sea and up to the Sea Life Centre, which is by Scalby Beck. INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY Michael Wooley |
