Bournemouth |
Just a few hundred years ago this little fishing village was
synonymous with smuggling brandy, silk and gin. It was Captain Louis Tregonwell
who changed all this after holidaying there with his wife Henrietta.
They built a house
which became the Royal Exeter Hotel, this set the tone for Bournemouth which
turned into a select retreat where the wealthiest people in society come to
escape from the world.Shops were banned in early Bournemouth and tradesmen were expected to call from Poole or Christchurch. By 1890 this had all changed, the railway had arrived and the once smugglers retreat was granted the status of Borough by Queen Victoria. Being on the South Coast, Bournemouth was part of Britain's front line during the Second World War and suffered many bombing raids - the most famous being the destruction of the lavish Metropole Hotel. The town also acted as a key centre for the D Day landing. Today it is a thriving and exciting university town with more than 160,000 residents. Our Routemaster Bus makes a lovely addition to the range. |
