Metrobus was formed twenty years ago by Tillingbourne, a rural
independent based in West Surrey, taking over former Orpington &
District operations between Orpington and Croydon. The vehicle is
carrying the Pearl Assurance adverts. Pearl grew from a loan club that
started in 1857 as the Pearl Loan Company, operating out of a pub called
the Royal Oak opposite the famous Whitechapel Bell Foundry. this joined
with The Pearl Life Assurance & Sick Benefit Society which had begun in
1862 and was located nearby. Why they had such similar names we don’t
know ?
