William Crawford founded Crawford biscuits in 1813, he started off in a
small shop in Shore of Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. During this time
supplies of cheap sugar and flour, plus chemical raising agents such as
bicarbonate of soda, led to the development of many sweet biscuit
recipes. In Britain several entrepreneurs laid the foundations of the
modern biscuit industry. The firms of Carrs, Huntley & Palmer, and
Crawfords were all established in this period. All were swallowed up by
larger groups, but the names fortunately still remain. |
