Anyone who knows anything about the Mettoy (later
Corgi) site in Swansea will instantly recognise the Ken Williams truck
opposite, with its distinctive colour scheme. In 1984 the General Toys
part of the 14 acre site was sold off, which included the original W
factory. It was split up into around 50 units, which were then used for
numerous types of business - one of these units was let to Ken, who took
extra care to maintain the look of his recovery vehicles. Sometimes we
would be summoned across to the MD’s office, to explain why we hadn’t
hit our targets. You’d cross the yard walking past a line of assorted
vehicles, all fully cleaned and ready to go - a fantastic sight. If you
were lucky Ken would give you a cheer as you walked back, if you weren’t
(several weren’t!) you’d never return, being shown out of the front
door. I recently visited Ken, who has since moved to a much larger site, he now has a huge variety of recovery trucks, all still kept in immaculate condition, on call 24 hours a day. Some of you may notice the similar colours to our Festival Of Transport vehicles that we issued for a few years. TAFF
