Bilko
The wonderful Sergeant Bilko - who can ever forget
him - immortalized forever by the half hour sitcom, and now as a
further tribute to Bilko, the VW Van.‘Bilko’, or Phil Silvers as
he always known, before being commissioned, was born of immigrant
parents on May 11th 1911 in Brooklyn, New York City (hence the
accent).
Phil grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn and his talent and wit
launched a show business career that culminated with the smash
broadway show "Top Banana" with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. This
led to many other shows and eventually on to that wonderful T.V.
series in
the 1950’s ‘Sgt Bilko’ based on an army unit where
deviousness and gambling are the rule.
Sadly Phil Silvers died in November, 1985 aged 74!
