Tommy Cooper

I was walking up the road the other night, a man came out of a doorway. He said, “Have you seen a policeman round here?” I said 'No'. He said 'stick them up'.

A typical Tommy Cooper joke, they seem so simple but many of us would be laughing well after the show had finished. Born in 1922 he moved at the age of three to Exeter from Caerphilly. By the sixties he had become a highly paid television star, but live performances were where he excelled. His last performance was in 1984 where sadly he died on stage.
