Campbells Soup |
| Originally known as the Joseph Campbell Preserve Company it was
founded in 1869 by Joseph Campbell, a New Jersey fruit merchant. In 1898 the company invented condensed soup which was ideal for use in cans. At the time tinned food was just taking off, but they were quite expensive as cans were hand made and more usually contained luxury products like jams and condiments. An advert in Good Housekeeping read as follows: ![]() Rich, nourishing and substantial. Made from the best that grows in the heart of New Jersey’s finest farming district. High grade in every sense of the words. Over SIXTEEN MILLION cans sold in 1904. Everything is done. The blend, the pare , the toil, the care. All you need do is: “Just Add a Can of Hot Water and Serve” One can makes sufficient Soup for the average family ![]() It’s strange that something as simple as soup would become an image in art and Andy Warhol gained his greatest fame in the sixties with his painting of a Campbells Soup can. Apparently his mother gave him Campbells tomato soup each day for his lunch. We show the soup on our VW which is our 10th in this series. |
