THE IMPORTANCE of TOBACCO in WAR
Tobacco, in the form of cigarettes, has become an increasing solace and refreshment to the fighting man. That sailors, soldiers, airmen and civilians too must have their cigarettes is recognised by all our Authorities. Even when the U-boat campaign was a real menace, shipping space was always found for the Virginia tobacco that maintained the supplies of State Express cigarettes. A good cigarette supports morale. It cheers the weary. It soothes the wounded. It is the brief refreshment that means so much in the stress of battle. * * * * * And tobacco in war has another importance. It produces a large revenue to finance the war effort. In the war years 1939 to 1945 the total duty collected on tobacco in Great Britain alone amounted to the vast sum of £1,700,000,000, one of the country’s greatest sources of revenue.
