The letter from Montgomery read as follows:

Eighth Army 29 - 4 - 43 Dear Sir I note that you have sent me 25,000 State Express Cigarettes for my soldiers. When they arrive they will be distributed to those who need them most. It is really very kind of you to have sent such a gift, it means a great deal to my men |
fighting hard here in Tunisia, to have plenty of cigarettes.
They will be informed who sent them.
