The comfort and welfare of the Fighting Forces called for something other than the issue of rations the official canteens could supply, particularly the troops in the forward fighting areas and isolated sites. The voluntary societies were foremost in appealing for funds to supply and equip mobile canteens to provide tea, snacks, books, cigarettes and other comforts, always highly appreciated by the men and women in the field, and the appeal was answered by State Express.

A Y. M. C. A. State Express Canteen did excellent service in the inhospitable climate of Iceland, while a Church Army State Express Mobile Canteen had the honour, while attached to our Armoured Divisions, of being the first voluntary society canteen to enter Germany with our victorious armies. Yet another State Express canteen administered by the Church Army put in a long period of service among the scattered and outlying Anti-Aircraft sites in the West Country.
