SERVING the CIVIL DEFENCE
The British people are alleged to be too fond of understatement, which may be the reason why officialdom described as an Incident any catastrophe which struck even the worlds greatest city. When an Incident occurred, the citizens themselves, formed into different categories of Civil Defence Units, took action against the common enemy. The men and women who worked long hours, and whose work was constantly interrupted by Air Raids, Flying Bombs and Rockets, were organised and trained as fire-fighters, A. R. P. Wardens, Special Police and Home Guards. On duty night after night and during the week-end, ready and waiting to tackle any situation as it arose, they had many weary hours of standing to though numerous Incidents to cope with. The following pictures graphically illustrate the magnificent work of the Civil Defence who appreciated the solace provided by the best cigarettes in the world.
