SERVING the PATRIOTS

in ENEMY - OCCUPIED

COUNTRIES

It requires great courage to be an active Patriot in a country over-run by the Enemy. Yet a man or woman, ill-armed and struggling against an enemy equipped with all the resource of science, needs the solace of a good cigarette.

We did our best to help these brave souls whenever we found an opportunity.

Perhaps the most dramatic occasion was when, on the birthday in 1941 of H. M. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Royal Air Force planes dropped cigarettes into Holland by parachute. They were made specially by the House of State Express of the blend of tobaccos the people of Holland prefer and were in a special packet bearing the Queen’s initial and crown.

There is no doubt that these Royal cigarettes were most thankfully received by the Dutch, and that the enemy were more exasperated by the feat than by any other form of propaganda.

As long as Britain could give such proof of her resourcefulness to the underground movement in Europe, no patriot could despair of ultimate freedom, even in the darkest days.
