A trainload of State Express cigarettes - the proprietors gift to the Red Cross - being sent to British and Allied Prisoners of War in Japanese hands, and cases for Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten’s Forces in South East Asia. The different ports to which State Express cigarettes were sent form almost a history of the war in themselves. The progress of the campaigns could be followed in arrears by the stencil marks on the hundreds of cases which poured out of the factories daily for destinations as far apart as the Azores and Fremantle. In many instances code marks were used and it says much for “ security “ that the guesses made as to the eventual port of call were invariably wide of the mark.
