Five of the six participating Oxbridge students had just finished their degrees, each charged with a specific role on the expedition. They set off from London on 1st September 1955 and flew to France where they continued their expedition in the two Land Rovers - one pale blue (Cambridge) and the second dark blue (Oxford). They arrived in Singapore on 6th March 1956, the journey having taken six months and six days over 18,000 miles. A book on their exploits - First Overland from London to Singapore - was written in 1957 following the expedition by Tim Slessor, one of the Cambridge participants. Upon their return, the two Land Rovers which had been officially named 'Oxford' and 'Cambridge', went their separate ways. Cambridge was sold to the Land Rover Factory in Solihull but was sadly lost on a later expedition when it ran off the road in the Middle East. However, Oxford still survives under the ownership of Adam Bennett who restored it to its original livery, even down to the registration plate. It passed its MOT first time around and continues as an active roadworthy motor!

This fantastic story is marked by these two 1:76 scale models which feature so much detail of the expedition. Maurice Wilks was inspired by his army-surplus Jeep to design a vehicle that could be used in the military and agriculture, as well as to help export. In 1947, prototypes were up and running and production of the Series I began at Solihull in 1948. It had permanent four-wheel-drive with low-ratio gearing and a locking freewheel mechanism, and a 50bhp, 1.6-litre engine from the Rover P3 saloon. It was fitted with lightweight body panels made from surplus aircraft-grade aluminium - steel was in short supply post-war - and came with army-surplus green paint. The Land Rover price started from just £450. Supply to the British forces started in 1949, the Land Rover replacing the Austin Champ and later, the rust-prone Austin Gipsy. Deliveries to organisations such as the Red Cross soon followed. The 100,000th Land Rover was made in autumn 1954 and by 1958, production ran to around 200,000. This open back Series I comes in blue and is based on a 109 inch wheelbase Land Rover. As a result, in 1919 the agency was formed as the Forestry Commission - a non-ministerial government department backed up by the passing of the Forestry Act by Parliament. The Commission bought up large areas of former agricultural land. The purposes of the agency have increased over time and it has now expanded beyond timber production to include the preservation and improvement of the UK's forests as well as providing and promoting outdoor activities within its boundaries; and a scientific research aspect now part of the Commission's remit, too. The Commission now employs nearly 3500 employees and handles a budget of over £50 million. It looks after over 1500 forests and is recognised internationally for its renowned research in sustainable forests, which also includes helping other landowners make their woodlands more productive and better for wildlife as well as coping with the challenges of a changing climate.

The highlights of the Forestry Commission Centenary year in 2019 include the Resilience Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show; Writers in the Forest - new literary works inspired by the nation's forests; the Big Forest Find, encouraging the younger generation particularly to record the wildlife in local forests; there will also be a wave of Centenary planting of trees across the country

Dimensions and Weights

Packed: 8.6cm x 5.4cm x 4.6cm ( L x W x H )

Unpacked: 6cm x 2.2cm x 2.7cm ( L x W x H )

Excludes shipping carton

Scale

1:76 scale means that this is 76 times smaller than the full sized vehicle(s)

For a much more detailed explanation of scale and the history please follow this link.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0488/9369/0011/products/76DEF017_ccdfc8c3-921f-4501-b703-2d37399385df.jpg?v=1633267251
land-rover-defender-garda-76def004
Oxford Diecast Garda Land Rover Defender Station Wagon - 1:76 Scale

This Defender takes on the guise of the Garda, the Irish Police Force, with a station wagon long wheelbase version. This Landrover fit onto the Leyland 1:76 car transporter and trailer.
Rover chief engineer Maurice Wilks was inspired by his army-surplus Willys-Overland Jeep to create a workhorse vehicle for military and agricultural use - and for export abroad to kick-start both Rover's fortunes and the national economy after World War II. Prototypes were up and running by late 1947, and production of the Series I began at Solihull in summer 1948.
