Anglophone readers may be disappointed to know that neither Britain nor the USA were pioneers in airship technology or development in any real sense. Most of the the credit for the early development of non-rigid airships goes to France, and all of the credit for rigid airship development goes to Germany. Italy pursued the semi-rigid type of airship, but few other countries found it interesting. Britain and the USA obtained all their technical data on non-rigids (blimps) from France, mostly by purchasing French airships, then copying them. The great advances in rigid airship design in Germany before the Great War left everyone else behind, so Britain had to send spies to Germany to try to catch up. It was only when German airships downed in the War could be measured and analysed that any true British rigid airship construction programme began, though the war had ended before any of their copies flew. Airship development in Germany had been intensive during the First World War, and the Allies were quick to capitalise on it by taking the latest Zeppelins as war reparations in 1919. They got little benefit from this activity, however, and it was only when Germany re-entered airship production that classic commercial airships reached their peak in the 1930s. The well-documented disasters to rigid airships of the major nations in the 1930s brought a halt to their development Every decade, however, seems to see a revival of airships as a commercial concept. The classic interwar era came to an end with a series of airship disasters in the 1930s, so the main part of the history only lasted little more than a third of a century.

This book is as much a tribute to Geoffrey de Havilland as it is to his fine aircraft designs. All his life the buccaneering F G Miles was known as 'Miles', never by his forename, but in this publication he is sometimes referred to as 'Fred', to avoid confusion. In 1930 he sold the business he had built up and left the country, to avoid bringing scandal to the woman he loved, but he returned to marry Blossom, and with his brother George the trio produced almost 50 aircraft designs in two decades. They included the classic Hawk low-wing light aircraft, wartime trainers, revolutionary transport designs and some extraordinary advanced projects. Fred was the dynamo whose unbounded enthusiasm kept everything going, Blossom was a talented draughtswoman and mathematician, and George was one of the most gifted aircraft designers of his generation. From 1936 to 1943 Rolls-Royce co-owned the company, until Fred bought them out. Almost 6,000 Miles aircraft were built in total, and though postwar designs such as the Messenger and Gemini were popular, the company was bankrupted in 1947. Fred recovered from the loss of his life's work, restarted his company, and in 1960 it merged with Auster into the ill-starred Beagle venture. When Beagle collapsed, Miles began yet again. Miles were not only aviation innovators; they were also produced 'Biro' ballpoint pens and Copycat copying machines, but it is for aeroplanes that the Miles name will be remembered. It came with a top speed of 400 mph, equipped with two 20.mm cannon as well as 12.7 Breda machine guns. It was a force to be reckoned with and despite its late entry into the conflict, only being produced between 1942 and 1944 and a mere 262 aircraft at that, it was highly successful , being both respected and feared by Allied pilots. Its pilots downed many Allied fighters, notably the American P-51D Mustang, Curtiss P-40, as well as Liberators, Blenheims and P-38 Lightnings. His distinguished World War II flying career saw him fighting over Libya and Tunisia as well as in the defence of the Italian mainland. He shot his first Allied plane down over Libya in 1941. At the end of 1943, Gorrini joined the Italian national republican air force, (ANR) where he was assigned to 1 Squadriglia, 1 Gruppa Caccia, where he continued to fly C.205 fighters. At the end of January 1944, under the command of 'Ace' Capitano Adriano Visconti, the Gruppa was sent out to attack a formation of American bombers under P-47 escort. He baled out but was too close to the ground, subsequently waking up in hospital. He recovered but did not fly operationally again. Living until November 2014, he summed up his World War II record as 212 air combats, 24 solo air victories and 5 parachute bale-outs. Of revolutionary design it is the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever to have been operational and a German test pilot of the time achieved a speed of 700 mph, an unofficial airspeed record which was unrivalled for almost a decade. Its official top speed was 959 kmph with a range of 40 kms. Over 300 aircraft were built and although the concept should have lead to a highly successful combat plane against the Allies, it proved to be too little, too late and early teething troubles which made it volatile and unstable were not ironed out in time to change the course of the German defeat in the air. Upon take-off the rocket fuel enabled the Komet to climb to 30,000 feet in just a few seconds but its speed made it very difficult to aim and fire accurately at the enemy convoys of aircraft. He learned to fly as a civilian and then joined the RAF where after officer training he was posted to 266 Squadron as a flight commander, flying Spitfires. Then in May 1940, he was posted to 87 Squadron, a Hurricane Squadron serving in France where, after a record number of enemy kills, he earned the reputation as being the fastest RAF pilot to make ace - in only two days. 87 Squadron was evacuated back to Britain in May 1940 to a Fighter Command air base in the West Country. From there the squadron took part in the Battle of Britain, flying Hurricane Mk I nightfighters to defend Bristol and Exeter. Gleed's success earned him promotion to squadron leader, taking command of RAF Charmy Down just north of Bath. His squadron spent a few months in 1941 at RAF Colerne, which was a satellite airfield for RAF Middle Wallop with squadrons flying back and forth on a daily basis. His battles included the Western Front, the Battle of France, the Battle of Britain and the North African Campaign and the Tunisian Campaign, during which he was awarded the DSO, DFC, Croix De Guerre (France) and the Croix De Guerre (Belgium). Developed by the Nuffield organisation in the late 1940s, it is interesting to note that the suspension was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis who later became most famous for his design of the Morris Minor and the Mini.

The Champ was an open four seater 4 x 4 vehicle which featured a Rolls-Royce 26.36cc 80 hp (60kw) 14 petrol engine. A light PVC coated hood, hinged doors and a set of weather screens were also available for use in deployments less weather-friendly. And Austin were commissioned to build 15,000 at their Longbridge plant although in the end, the vehicle proved so expensive to produce that the last 4000 were never made. Some were fitted out with additional equipment for deployment as field ambulances, telephone line-laying or even carrying armour and a .303 in Vickers Machine gun or .303 Bren gun. Most, however, served as cargo or personnel carriers and could be fitted with radios. Sadly, the Austin was out-classed by rival Land Rover on economic, performance and driver preference grounds.

This model is deployed by the 7th Armoured Division, also known as the Deserts Rats, in Germany in 1957. The Desert Rats are one of the most famous units of the British Army and made their name for their distinguished service in the deserts of North Africa in World War II. Their insignia, a red rat on a white background, can be seen on the front and the rear of our Champ, along with other military markings. Registered 10 BF 23, the Champ is decorated in a distinctive bronze green with dark beige interior seating and a lighter beige folded down hood. It also comes as a right hand drive vehicle. Intricate detailing includes the black steering wheel with silver spokes and a matt black finish to the radiator grille. Also faithful to the original is the large dark green petrol can on the back of the jeep, held in place with beige straps next to the spare wheel.

In real life, about 500 civilian models were made, some with left hand drive and costing between £750 and £1000 in the 1950s. There are almost none still around in the UK today, although you might find one in Australia.
