Anglophone readers may be disappointed to know that neither Britain nor the USA were pioneers in airship technology or development in any real sense. Most of the the credit for the early development of non-rigid airships goes to France, and all of the credit for rigid airship development goes to Germany. Italy pursued the semi-rigid type of airship, but few other countries found it interesting. Britain and the USA obtained all their technical data on non-rigids (blimps) from France, mostly by purchasing French airships, then copying them. The great advances in rigid airship design in Germany before the Great War left everyone else behind, so Britain had to send spies to Germany to try to catch up. It was only when German airships downed in the War could be measured and analysed that any true British rigid airship construction programme began, though the war had ended before any of their copies flew. Airship development in Germany had been intensive during the First World War, and the Allies were quick to capitalise on it by taking the latest Zeppelins as war reparations in 1919. They got little benefit from this activity, however, and it was only when Germany re-entered airship production that classic commercial airships reached their peak in the 1930s. The well-documented disasters to rigid airships of the major nations in the 1930s brought a halt to their development Every decade, however, seems to see a revival of airships as a commercial concept. The classic interwar era came to an end with a series of airship disasters in the 1930s, so the main part of the history only lasted little more than a third of a century.

This book is as much a tribute to Geoffrey de Havilland as it is to his fine aircraft designs. All his life the buccaneering F G Miles was known as 'Miles', never by his forename, but in this publication he is sometimes referred to as 'Fred', to avoid confusion. In 1930 he sold the business he had built up and left the country, to avoid bringing scandal to the woman he loved, but he returned to marry Blossom, and with his brother George the trio produced almost 50 aircraft designs in two decades. They included the classic Hawk low-wing light aircraft, wartime trainers, revolutionary transport designs and some extraordinary advanced projects. Fred was the dynamo whose unbounded enthusiasm kept everything going, Blossom was a talented draughtswoman and mathematician, and George was one of the most gifted aircraft designers of his generation. From 1936 to 1943 Rolls-Royce co-owned the company, until Fred bought them out. Almost 6,000 Miles aircraft were built in total, and though postwar designs such as the Messenger and Gemini were popular, the company was bankrupted in 1947. Fred recovered from the loss of his life's work, restarted his company, and in 1960 it merged with Auster into the ill-starred Beagle venture. When Beagle collapsed, Miles began yet again. Miles were not only aviation innovators; they were also produced 'Biro' ballpoint pens and Copycat copying machines, but it is for aeroplanes that the Miles name will be remembered. The snake decoration runs the length of the aircraft with its open jaws and fangs finishing just behind the nose cone. Doubtless it would have proved a daunting sight, highly visible in white and an ochre yellow. On the model front, it adds a very unique dimension to your Oxford WWII enemy airfield.

Dimensions and Weights

Packed: 9cm x 9cm x 8.3cm ( L x W x H )

Unpacked: 19cm x 15.3cm x 10.6cm ( L x W x H )

Excludes shipping carton

Scale

1:72 scale means that this is 72 times smaller than the full sized vehicle(s)

For a much more detailed explanation of scale and the history please follow this link.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0488/9369/0011/products/AC085_d825851c-d319-43fb-b162-eb0c1faaa0d0.jpg?v=1633271062
me163b-komet-white-54-niemcy-1945-ac084
Me163b Komet White 54 - 14JG 400 Niemcy 1945

The Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet was a German rocket-powered short-range fighter/interceptor aircraft, designed by Alexander Lippisch, which took its first flight on 1st September 1941 and which was introduced for use by the Luftwaffe in 1944. Of revolutionary design it is the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever to have been operational and a German test pilot of the time achieved a speed of 700 mph, an unofficial airspeed record which was unrivalled for almost a decade. Its official top speed was 959 kmph with a range of 40 kms. Over 300 aircraft were built and although the concept should have lead to a highly successful combat plane against the Allies, it proved to be too little, too late and early teething troubles which made it volatile and unstable were not ironed out in time to change the course of the German defeat in the air. Upon take-off the rocket fuel enabled the Komet to climb to 30,000 feet in just a few seconds but its speed made it very difficult to aim and fire accurately at the enemy convoys of aircraft. Landing was even more dangerous as the Komet only had 9 minutes of fuel from take-off to combat and its return journey necessitated gliding powerlessly back to the airfield.

Jagdgeschwader 400 (JG 400) was the only frontline Luftwaffe fighter wing squadron to fly the ME 163 rocket fighter operationally and under the supervision of their notable Commander Wolfgang Spate, first flew the aircraft on 16th August 1944. In the early 1900s, motoring was a relatively new and exciting mode of transport, but it was also fraught with challenges. Roads were often poor, and there was a lack of infrastructure to support the growing number of cars. To address these issues, a group of motoring enthusiasts came together in 1905 to form the AA.

The AA's original mission was to help motorists avoid police speed traps. The Motor Car Act of 1903 had introduced new penalties for breaking the speed limit, and motorists were eager to find ways to navigate the roads safely and legally. The AA's network of patrolmen helped to keep drivers informed about speed traps, reducing the risk of fines and penalties.

Beyond speed traps, the AA also played a crucial role in promoting motoring in the UK. It produced road maps and guidebooks, organized motoring events, and lobbied the government for better roads and infrastructure. The AA's work helped to make motoring more accessible and popular, paving the way for the widespread adoption of cars in the years to come.

Expanding Services: From Breakdown Cover to Financial Services

As motoring became more popular, the AA's services also expanded. In 1907, the AA introduced its first motor insurance policies, providing drivers with peace of mind in case of accidents or breakdowns. The AA also began to offer a range of other services, such as driving lessons, hotel recommendations, and legal advice.

In the 1930s, the AA's services were further enhanced with the introduction of its breakdown patrol cars. These mobile units were equipped to provide roadside assistance to motorists who had experienced mechanical problems. The AA's breakdown service quickly became a lifeline for drivers across the UK, and it remains one of the organization's most popular offerings today.

This is 1:76 scale model ideal for collectors and modellers of 00 railway layouts. 6.4cm in length it comes on a plinth with a clear case lid and Oxford Diecast wrap.

Dimensions and Weights

Packed: 8.6cm x 5.4cm x 4.6cm ( L x W x H )

Unpacked: 6.4cm x 3cm x 2.6cm ( L x W x H )

Dimensions excludes shipping carton.
