The position however was changing and in the UKs home market, the American companies GM with its Vauxhall marque and Ford accounted for over a quarter of the output, consolidation by the local producers became a necessity. Nuffield and Austin combined bringing together so many iconic British Marques under the BMC name - Austin, Morris, MG, Riley and Wolseley. The other competing groups being Rootes and Standard-Triumph.  Smaller producers such as Rover and Jaguar competed, but did not have the economies of scale of the larger groups. BMC now had such a wide model range of models and designs that it was represented by similar vehicles in the same sectors. The production of vehicles in Germany had now increased and Britain found itself demoted to become the 3rds largest manufacturer. Three of the four vehicles in the team were fitted with a powered trailer drive and all of them were given military registration plates. Our model represents the fourth which was not fitted with a powered trailer and was registered 60 FL 38. The C.205 was one of three Series 5 Italian fighters built using the powerful Daimler-Benz DB605 engine. It came with a top speed of 400 mph, equipped with two 20.mm cannon as well as 12.7 Breda machine guns. It was a force to be reckoned with and despite its late entry into the conflict, only being produced between 1942 and 1944 and a mere 262 aircraft at that, it was highly successful , being both respected and feared by Allied pilots. Its pilots downed many Allied fighters, notably the American P-51D Mustang, Curtiss P-40, as well as Liberators, Blenheims and P-38 Lightnings. Even the noble Spitfire was part of their tallies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of these Italian fighter aces was Sergente Maggiore Luigi Gorrini who was born in 1917. His distinguished World War II flying career saw him fighting over Libya and Tunisia as well as in the defence of the Italian mainland. He shot his first Allied plane down over Libya in 1941. At the end of 1943, Gorrini joined the Italian national republican air force, (ANR) where he was assigned to 1 Squadriglia, 1 Gruppa Caccia, where he continued to fly C.205 fighters. At the end of January 1944, under the command of 'Ace' Capitano Adriano Visconti, the Gruppa was sent out to attack a formation of American bombers under P-47 escort. Gorrini's score included a B-24, P-47 and then a P-38. His last air battle was on 15\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e June 1944 when his plane was hit during a dogfight with four P-47 Thunderbolts. He baled out but was too close to the ground, subsequently waking up in hospital. He recovered but did not fly operationally again. Living until November 2014, he summed up his World War II record as 212 air combats, 24 solo air victories and 5 parachute bale-outs. Not only was he the highest ranking Italian fighter ace still alive at the time but was also the only surviving pilot to be awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll this history is encapsulated in our 1:72 scale model of the Veltro C.205 which appears in the typical Italian World War II camouflage scheme of dark grey\/mid grey upper body and wings, pale blue\/grey mottled fuselage and pale blue grey under body. Over 300 aircraft were built and although the concept should have lead to a highly successful combat plane against the Allies, it proved to be too little, too late and early teething troubles which made it volatile and unstable were not ironed out in time to change the course of the German defeat in the air. Upon take-off the rocket fuel enabled the Komet to climb to 30,000 feet in just a few seconds but its speed made it very difficult to aim and fire accurately at the enemy convoys of aircraft. Landing was even more dangerous as the Komet only had 9 minutes of fuel from take-off to combat and its return journey necessitated gliding powerlessly back to the airfield.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJagdgeschwader 400 (JG 400) was the only frontline Luftwaffe fighter wing squadron to fly the ME 163 rocket fighter operationally and under the supervision of their notable Commander Wolfgang Spate, first flew the aircraft on 16\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e August 1944. Its limited successes were almost equalled by its losses. The squadron - and with it the operational life of the ME 163B - was disbanded in April 1945.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere we see 'White 54' in dark red brown and green camouflage scheme with white Luftwaffe markings and mottled grey fuselage to the upper body. The Typhoon was a single-seat, fighter-bomber produced by Hawker Aircraft, first introduced in 1941. In January 1944 he was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander of 121 Wing based at RAF Holmsley South flying Typhoons, complete with rocket firing capability, which he always thought superior to the Hurricane. So armed, in the summer of 1944, his Squadron waged a successful battle in the Falaise region of Northern France against the German Panzer Division. However on 26\u003csup data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eDecember that year on another mission, Charles Green had to bale out and was captured. He became a POW in Stalag Luft 1 but was returned to the UK in May 1945. He was awarded the DSO and Bar as well as the DFC for his wartime achievements and returned home to run a successful farm after the conflict. Our 1:76 model is as used by the 15th Scottish Infantry Division as a GS (General Service) transport vehicle and is decorated in the khaki green\/black and olive green camouflage colour scheme. This OY model features a 'canvas' tilt at the back. The chassis is khaki green and both the front grille and side grille slots are finished in matt black. Note too, the single rear wheel configuration.
