Oxford Rail Standard Cowans Sheldon 15T Crane Update

Oxford Rail Standard Cowans Sheldon 15T Crane Update

We have an update on one of the most asked-about items since Oxford Rail began -largely due to how long it has taken to bring it to market. We won’t go into too much detail here, but as many of you know, a lot has changed since this item was first announced: from Covid, to bringing the business back into family ownership, to structural staff changes, and ultimately having to restart the project almost from scratch.

The crane has required extensive development to accommodate the complex mechanisms to operate the jib and the hook. With the addition of the accompanying match truck, another essential element was introduced, one we felt the project simply couldn’t be without.

Despite some stumbling blocks, and with all preceding projects now delivered, this is our main focus. The item is currently in the tooling stage, and we are hopeful to see the first shots very soon. We had hoped to have these available to show at the Festival of Model Railways this coming weekend; however, this has unfortunately not been possible.

Now to the most talked-about point: the price. When we announced this item back in 2020, we fully acknowledge that the indicative price was incorrect. The project has since evolved significantly and now sits at a very different price point. This will be a fully mechanically working crane with an accompanying match truck for support and transport, and it will retail at £99.95. We are confident that this represents strong value within the current market and remains true to our brand ethos of supplying great models at great prices.

We are confident that this will be a best seller, a standout model to add to your collection, offering the opportunity to create scenic layouts, run it as part of a train, and enjoy plenty of play value thanks to its fully poseable design.

Since these date from the 1890s, do you have any future plans to release any in pre-grouping liveries? I agree with Stephen Lea’s Comment "Now that you’ve got the hang of Midland Railway wagons, perhaps you would like to try some more? ". I’d certainly appreciate a few of the more common Midland Railway wagons.

Great news, have had this on pre-order for at least 2 years. Well worth the wait and the addition of the match wagon. Looks like a very attractive and quality model and the price tag is hardly surprising.

Alec Revitt - November 21, 2025

Long awaited but I am confident it will be worth it@

Put Me Down For TWO, As The Norm From Oxforx Rail Another Spot On Project. And the price is more than fair to be honest

Martin Keilloh - November 21, 2025

Great to see you back in family ownership and all the very best going forward.

Looks fantastic, Durham Locomotive Preservation Group are looking forward to these arriving and expecting these to be extremely popular with our trade customers.

We cannot wait to see what new products come from the team in the future

As a Midland Railway wagon nut, I’m almost appreciating this as much for the match wagon as for the crane! I trust you have been referring to Derby C&W Drg. 847, a scan of which is downloadable from the Midland Railway Study Centre website, item 88-D0115, as well as the drawing in David Hunt’s article in Midland Record No. 2. Drg. 847 was originally prepared in 1891 for a 10 ton crane so has a different jib rest to the one you have correctly modelled for the 15 ton cranes of 1894. Now that you’ve got the hang of Midland Railway wagons, perhaps you would like to try some more? The Midland Railway Study Centre has all the original drawings you could wish for!

Robert - November 21, 2025

Have had this on pre-order possibly from day 1, not at all surprised by new costing. I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

Alan Jones - November 21, 2025

I am very interested to note the story of this model. It seems an excellent addition to any decent sized layout and should prove to be hours of fun to any modeller.
I am just frustrated at the progress of my own layout as I haven’t gone beyond the ‘planning approval stage’ ( ‘er indoors) yet, but perhaps I will get this by the time this model goes into production.

Steve - November 21, 2025

Well, that’s certainly good news.
A bit more expensive than the originally announced price but, I don’t think that anyone seriously thought that you could produce a decent model for 20 quid (or whatever it was).
Once you’ve sorted this perhaps you could produce one in TT120?
