Joseph Cyril Bamford began building agricultural tipping trailers in his garage 1945. In 1949 the JCB Major Loader was launched, for agricultural work. In 1952 the Mk 1 Excavator was produced, the first JCB backhoe loader. In 1963 the backhoe design crystallised in the JCB 3C. In 1964 the firm made its first tracked excavator, the JCB 7. The JCB 110 hydrostatic crawler loader appeared in 1971. A new type of machine was launched in 1977, the JCB 520 telescopic handler. In 1980 JCB made what was claimed to be the construction industry's largest investment in a single machine, the JCB 3CX. The 'world's first fully suspended, high-speed draught tractor', was launched in 1990, the JCB Fastrac. More new machines appeared in the 1990s; the JCB robot skid steer loader (1993) and the JCB robot skid steer loader (1997). The JCB Dieselmax record car took the diesel world land speed record in 2006. The millionth JCB machine was produced in 2013. It was a silver-finished 22-ton JS220 tracked excavator. In the 21st century JCB has 11,000 employees in 22 plants on four continents.
