The 1940's
During the war years many manufacturing plants were switched over to military production. The car industry was no different, but after the war it took time to change back to the supply of general purpose vehicles. The position was made harder because steel which was controlled by the government was prioritised to those companies concentrating on exports. This led to Britain ramping up of production and eventually supplying over half of the worlds output. 1948 saw the introduction of the Series I Land Rover.
