The 1966 Pontiac GTO was a landmark car in American automotive history. It is considered by some to be the first true muscle car, and it helped to usher in a golden era of performance for American automakers. It was originally introduced in 1964 as an optional performance package for the Pontiac Tempest LeMans. However, it quickly became so popular that Pontiac decided to make it a standalone model in 1966.
 

It was available in two body styles: coupe and convertible. Both body styles were characterized by their sleek, aggressive styling, which included a long hood, short deck, and distinctive "Coke-bottle" rear fenders. Under the hood it was powered by a standard 389 cubic inch V8 engine, which produced 335 horsepower. However, there were a variety of optional engine packages available, including a 421 cubic inch V8 that produced 360 horsepower.

The 1966 GTO was a huge success for Pontiac. It sold over 38,000 units, which was more than twice the number of GTOs that were sold in 1965. The GTO's success helped to solidify Pontiac's reputation as a builder of high-performance cars.

    Very accurately detailed and a fine addition to my HO scale model RR

    Excellent. this car and the 9 others I ordered were all very well executed scale models. The detail really comes out in my close up pics on my HO model RR. So far I have been pleasantly surprised at the attention to detail and quality, especially at the 1:87 scale size. I have found Oxford models superior in these respects to other available brands. I'm looking forward to seeing new additions to their 1:87 scale lineup.

    ‘66 GTO

    Great model! Easily disassembled for installation of a driver. It will look great on my HO scale model railroad. Now it would be great to have you produce a ‘67 Firebird 400, a ‘61 Pontiac Bonneville bubble top, and a ‘57 Pontiac Star Chief 2 door hardtop.
